Do you need maternity insurance?
Maternity insurance is not for everyone. It is designed for parents who want extra protection during pregnancy and after birth. MOH describes it as optional private cover that can add protection for pregnancy complications and conditions a baby is born with.
What does maternity insurance cover?
Maternity insurance pays fixed cash benefits when a covered pregnancy complication or newborn condition happens. It works alongside MediShield Life and your Integrated Shield Plan rather than replacing them. Many plans also let you insure your newborn without medical underwriting, subject to plan rules.
Pregnancy complications
A lump sum or daily cash benefit may be paid for listed conditions such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, placenta problems and miscarriage after a stated stage of pregnancy.
Congenital conditions
A lump sum may be paid if the baby is born with a condition listed in the policy. The plans we compare cover 23 to 26 conditions.
Premature birth & NICU
The plan may pay a lump sum or daily cash if the baby is born early or needs neonatal intensive care.
Guaranteed newborn cover
Some plans offer life, total and permanent disability, critical illness or hospital cover for the baby without medical underwriting.
Mother’s hospital & psychological care
Every plan pays the mother daily hospital cash for covered complications. Some plans also include limited mental health support after birth.
Maternity insurance in Singapore does not cover everything. Routine delivery, conditions not listed in the policy and conditions known before you apply are usually excluded.
Maternity insurance may be worth comparing if any of these apply to you.
- You are pregnant and within the application window, which runs from about week 13 to week 35 or 36.
- You want extra cash if your baby needs care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Your hospital plan pays eligible bills, while maternity insurance pays a separate cash benefit.
- You want to arrange insurance for your child before birth, so your baby can be covered without medical underwriting.
- You conceived through IVF or another assisted method, or you are expecting more than one baby.
It may be less useful if you are already past the application window or you only want help with hospital bills. MediShield Life and your Integrated Shield Plan already cover eligible hospital costs.
Maternity insurance only pays when a covered event happens. If the pregnancy goes smoothly and no covered event occurs, there is usually no payout and the premium is not refunded. The value comes from the protection you have during the pregnancy and the newborn options included in the plan.

Maternity insurance comparison with MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans
Parents often ask why they need maternity insurance when they already have MediShield Life and an Integrated Shield Plan. The short answer is that they do different jobs.
| | MediShield Life | Integrated Shield Plan | Maternity Insurance |
|---|
| How it helps | Helps pay eligible hospital bills | Helps pay eligible hospital bills at higher ward classes | Pays fixed cash benefits when the policy conditions are met |
| Pregnancy complications | Covers inpatient treatment for 24 listed serious pregnancy and delivery complications at MediShield Life claim limits | May extend hospital bill cover to A ward or private hospital | Cash benefit for listed pregnancy complications |
| Emergency Caesarean or premature birth | Eligible hospital costs only | Eligible hospital costs only | May pay a cash benefit for a listed complication, or NICU cash for premature birth |
| Condition found in the baby at birth | Eligible hospital costs only | Eligible hospital costs only | May pay a lump sum for listed conditions |
| Cover for the newborn | Singapore Citizen babies are covered from birth | Baby needs their own Integrated Shield Plan, usually applied for after birth | Selected newborn or NICU benefits may start from birth |
| Guaranteed newborn insurance | No | No | Selected plans may offer life, critical illness, early critical illness or hospital cover without medical underwriting |
In short: MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans mainly help with eligible medical bills. Maternity insurance can add fixed cash benefits and selected newborn benefits. The plans can work together rather than replace one another.
Standalone and bundled maternity insurance plans
Most maternity insurance plans in Singapore fall into two groups. One is a standalone cover for the pregnancy. The other is maternity cover that comes with a longer term life or investment linked plan.
Standalone
Standalone maternity insurance
- Covers selected pregnancy and newborn events for a fixed period.
- You pay one premium, and there is no long-term base policy.
- Every standalone plan we compare offers some newborn cover without medical underwriting, but the type and amount differ.
- May suit you if you mainly want cover for the pregnancy and early years without committing to a long-term policy.
- Available from Great Eastern, Income, Manulife, Prudential and Singlife.
- If you conceived through IVF, check the assisted pregnancy terms. Income does not accept assisted pregnancies, Manulife adds a 75% premium loading and Singlife charges a higher premium.
Bundled
Bundled maternity insurance
- Attached to a life or investment-linked plan.
- You pay one premium, while the base policy continues with annual premiums according to its payment term.
- After your baby is born, the base plan may be transferred to your child without medical underwriting, depending on the plan terms.
- May suit you if you want to keep insurance for your child beyond the maternity period.
- Available from AIA, Great Eastern, HSBC Life and Prudential.
- For HSBC Life HappyMummy and Great Eastern Maternity Protect Multiplier, each baby needs a separate whole life plan.
Planner Bee maternity enquiries show that about 55% of parents choose bundled plans. The most common reason is wanting to keep their baby insurable if a health issue is found during pregnancy or at birth.
What if the pregnancy does not continue?
A standalone plan may pay a benefit for a covered miscarriage if the policy conditions are met. A bundled plan’s base policy may continue under its own terms even without a live birth.

How to choose the best insurance for pregnancy
Once you have shortlisted a few maternity insurance plans, compare the points below. They can make a bigger difference than the headline price.
Choose a sum assured that matches your main concern
These plans offer a sum assured between S$5,000 and S$30,000. Many benefits, such as hospital cash and NICU cash, are a percentage of the sum assured. A higher amount increases the payout but also the premium.
Check how the NICU benefit pays
Some plans pay a daily amount up to a limit, while others add a lump sum. Compare both the daily payout and the maximum number of days.
Decide early between standalone maternity insurance and bundled cover
Standalone cover may suit you if you only want pregnancy protection. Bundled cover may suit you if you also want longer term insurance for your child.
Read the actual list of covered conditions
A plan with more listed conditions is not always better for your needs. Check whether the pregnancy complications or baby conditions you are most concerned about are included.
Check the newborn cover if future insurability matters to you
Plans differ in the amount, the types of cover and whether a hospital plan is included.
Check the IVF or IUI rules if they apply to you
HSBC Life charges the same premium for assisted pregnancies, Manulife adds a 75% loading while Prudential and Singlife charges more. Income Maternity 360 does not accept assisted pregnancies.
Already shortlisted a few plans? We can compare the policy details side-by-side.
How much is maternity insurance in Singapore?
There is no single price for pregnancy insurance in Singapore. The premium can differ based on your age, health, pregnancy details, coverage amount and the plan you choose.
The example below is for a 32-year-old woman with a natural single pregnancy and a $10,000 sum assured.
Standalone plans
| INSURER | PLAN | ONE-TIME PREMIUM COST |
|---|
| Singlife | Maternity Care | $698 |
| Income | Maternity 360 | $837.65 |
| Manulife | ReadyMummy | $840 |
| Prudential | PRUMum | $902.40 |
| Great Eastern | Maternity Protect | $1,108 |
Note: All values are in Singapore dollars
Bundled plans
The following example is shown for whole life coverage with $200K sum assured for death, total permanent disability, critical illness, early critical illness (Death/TPD/CI/ECI).
| INSURER | PLAN | ONE-TIME PREMIUM COST | BASE POLICY ANNUAL COST (20 YEAR PREMIUM TERM) |
|---|
| HSBC | Happy Mummy | $838 | $1,454.22 |
| Prudential | PRUFirst Promise | $902.40 | Year 1: $962.50 (Death/TPD only) Year 2 onwards: $1990.80 (Death/TPD/CI/ECI) |
| AIA | AIA Mum2Baby Choices | $920 | $1,613.39 |
Note: All values are in Singapore dollars. The maternity portion is paid once. The base policy continues under its own payment term and may later be transferred to the child.
What this means
Standalone plans usually cost less upfront because you pay only for the maternity cover. Bundled plans cost more because you also pay for a base policy that continues after the maternity period. When comparing, look at the total premiums over the payment term rather than the first-year amount alone, and weigh that against the newborn cover you get in return. Maternity insurance is only one part of your baby budget, alongside delivery, childcare and other early costs.
